How Xbox regional pricing works
Digital storefronts do not have a single global price. Microsoft, like Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo, sets a separate list price for each country store. Understanding why — and why Argentina became famous for it — explains almost everything else on this site.
Regional pricing exists to match local purchasing power. A $70 release is an impulse buy in the US but a serious expense in countries where average wages are far lower. Publishers accept lower margins in those markets to keep volumes alive.
The exchange rate engine
List prices in Argentine pesos are set at a moment in time and then updated only occasionally. The peso, however, moves constantly. When ARS weakens against the dollar faster than Microsoft adjusts its price list, the converted dollar price of a game quietly drops — sometimes by half or more within months.
That lag is the entire opportunity. Nothing is “on sale”; the price tag in pesos simply no longer reflects the new exchange rate. Eventually the store catches up and raises ARS prices, and the gap narrows again.

Typical price comparison
| Region | AAA new release, typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $69.99 | Reference price, plus local tax |
| Eurozone | €79.99 | Usually the most expensive major region |
| Argentina | ARS list ≈ $25–45 equivalent | Depends heavily on current exchange rate and taxes |
| Turkey | TRY list ≈ $30–50 equivalent | Second most popular budget region |
Taxes change the math
Argentina applies digital-service taxes on foreign-currency transactions, and store prices may be displayed before certain local taxes. The final amount charged to an ARS gift-card balance is what matters — always check the checkout total, not the banner price.
- Converted savings of 30% or more are common on big releases.
- Indie games often have smaller gaps — sometimes the US price wins.
- Game Pass pricing differs per region too, though subscriptions draw more enforcement attention than one-off purchases.
Why prices sometimes jump overnight
When Microsoft revises a region’s price list, ARS prices can rise 50–100% in a single update. Games you were watching can double in price without warning. Communities that track Argentine store prices exist precisely because these updates arrive unannounced — if you plan a purchase, do not sit on a topped-up balance for months.
