After an Xbox region switch: what still breaks
Changing an Xbox account region is not the same as finishing a purchase. After the storefront flips, billing, Game Pass and old gift-card balance do not always follow. This is the checklist of what still breaks. It is not a how-to on evading a ban.
If Microsoft already warned the account, stop and read the risks article. This page assumes a clean switch and lists the leftovers.
What usually survives, what usually does not
Games you already own stay in the library more often than people fear. The store you buy from next is what changed. A leftover peso balance can sit unused if you flip back. A Game Pass subscription billed in one region may not convert cleanly to another; check the subscription screen before you assume the next charge is “the cheap one”.
Payment methods are picky. A card issued outside Argentina may fail at checkout even with a working VPN. That is why gift-card balance exists as a workaround — and why a code for the wrong national store is worthless.

Walk the screens in this order
| Screen | What to confirm | Typical leftover |
|---|---|---|
| Account region | Country matches the store you want | Console and browser showing two countries |
| Payment / balance | A method that can settle that store | Card declined; old currency stranded |
| Subscriptions | Next renewal region and price | Pass still on the old store |
| Redeem | PIN country = this store | “Code cannot be redeemed” |
The non-obvious one: two devices, two stores
A browser session on a PC and the console cache can disagree for a while. If the website sells you Argentina and the console still checks out elsewhere, you did not fail the VPN. You failed to look at both screens. Sign-out, check region, then redeem. Do not buy twice to “see which one works”.
- Library first: you already own it, or you do not. Region does not invent a licence.
- Balance is not portable like cash in a wallet. Expect it to stay put.
- Subscription renewal ≠ the store you browsed today.
- PIN country must match. No exceptions you will like.
- Browser and console: same country, then pay once.

Close
After a region change, walk four screens: country, payment, subscription, redeem. The purchase is the last click, not the first. If any screen still shows the old store, you are not ready to spend. That is the whole leftover problem. It is boring. It is why people buy the wrong code.
